PUMPING FORCE INCREASED'.

SITUATION QUITE FAVOURABLE

(m TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GISBORNE,- Jan. 27.; There is little further to report concerning the Northumberland. The tug Terfawhiti went alongside at 8.45 a.iii. and landed portable' pumps which were rigged up immediately and got into operation at- 10 o’clock. They quickly showed a slight gain on the water, and within half an hour the vessel was lifting. The Terawhiti is fitting her own pumps, which would be' operating during the afternoon. An official statement is that the situiation is quite favourable. Captain 01 pbei t- is aboard supervising the work.

ANOTHER HOLE DISCOVERED

GISBORNE, Jan. 27. It was rej*o,rted this morning that another hole had been located iii the hull of the Northumberland, further aft than that one upon which early salvage operations were concentrated. The indications are that the ship, after striking the rock or other submerged object, swung off slightly and then touched a second time. The location of the- second rent is stated to he some feet aft of the hole first discovered. Further diving operations (were carried out early to-day fend the report concerning the discovery of another hole was confirmed at noon, ft-he n a party of shipping officials came ashore. The diver was engaged to-day in the direction of outside repairs.
