11l order to relievo employers and officers of the Department of Labour ol’ unnecessary work in compiling the statistics of journeymen in cases where it is clear that a district quota ii> not- nearly full, an amendment to the Apprentices’ Act, 1923, has been filed in the Arbitration Court, to take effect from January 2d. The amendment is to the effect that no employer shall be required to furnish a return of the number of journeymen employed by him unless the district- registrar or court requires him in writing so to do. It shall be the duty of the, district registrar to require employers to furnish, returns" if and when it- appears to him that the number of apprentices in a district exceeds 90 per cent of the quota permitted. The amendment also enables returns, if required. to be called for at a. date more convenient than March 31. It is thought that November 30. which approximates the. close of the school voar. when numbers of lads arc seeking apprenticeships, will be a, more -suitable date at wuioli. to call loi the returns.
