The marble walls of the new Nelson Cathedral are now visibly rising on both sides of the nave, east and west, and one can form some idea of the size of this portion of the sacred edifice (says the Mail). Loads of uncut marble have, arrived upon the ground ready to be sawn into the required shape and size. Interesting observations regarding motoring in England and tlic wonderful roads that are to be found everywhere there were made to a Poverty Bay Herald reporter by Mr J. G. Appleton, of Te Karaka, who has just returned from a trip Home. Mr Appleton said that in giving one’s impressions received during a brief visit to other lands it was no doubt impossible to avoid falling into the error of taking as common occurrences events or actions which might he as novel to the inhabitants as they were to the casual observer, so that one felt some diffidence in drawing conclusions from brief observations. “One thimr ‘Stands out and may be stated by the visitor to England without fear" of contradiction,” continued Mr Appleton, “namely, the tremendous revolution which has taken place in the construction of roads since the advent of motor traffic. Thousands of roads of the first class have been constructed, and the work is still going on on a large scale, so that one "an now motor in all parts of the conutrv on good thoroughfares; even the by-roads generally have a good surface, though they are often _so narrow that two vehicles have difficulty in passing. Nothing could be better than the great arterial roads, which are built with curves and grades that resemble a railway track.” (By special arrangement, Keuter's World Service, in addition to other special sources of information, is used in the cow. relation of the oversea intelligence published in this issue, and all ritrhts therein in Australia and New Zealand are reserved.)
