ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
BOY SERIOUSLY HURT. (by telegraph—pit ess association.; WELLINGTON, Jan. 25. While riding a,bicycle down Devon Street, one of the steepest grades in Wellington, Ernest Bigwood, aged 12 years, lost control and crashed intu a telegraph post- He received internal injuries to the head, and was admitted to hospital in a serious condition. FIGHTING THE LEAK. LEVEL OF WATER- IN ONE HOLD REDUCED. GISBORNE, Jan. 2G. It wins reported from, the Northumberland at 8 a.m. that the pumps liad reduced the level of the water in No. 1 hold .considerably, though the depth Was not stated. Collision, mates had been fixed over tlio rent in the vessel at No. 2 hold. The crew are preparing to shore up the bulkheads on either side at No. 2 hold. Portion of the cargo from No. 3 hold had been removed, and tlie ship is now more on an even keel. Lighters this morning were taking out heavy balks of timber to be used in the' shoreing-up operations.
