TOWARDS THE ORIENT
ITALIAN EXPANSION.
A SHARE WANTED. IN UNOCCUPIED TERRITORY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Jan. 24. Signor Mussolini, interviewed by Ashmead Bartlett for the Daily Express, said that the Fascist militia now numbered 265,000 enrolled men, but only 10,000 were permanently on duty under arms. The militia was absolutely untrained and unequipped for foreign warfare. Italy bad only 149,000 soldiers for the defence of her frontiers, and it was nonsense to talk of aggression. “There are now 42,000,000 Italians on our soil, in addition to 10,000,000 overseas,” said Signor Mussolini. “Boom must be found for more. Italy cannot expand in the west. Can we be blamed if we turn our eyes to the Orient? “I regard it as absolutely wrong to take their colonies from the Powers who have spent blood and money in doing the pioneer work, but Italy is entitled to her share of unoccupied territory.”
