The decision of the Gritish Chain oer of Commerce at Hankow tnat British oaniung and shipping companies ana merchants shoulQ resume trade on January 24 was reached after consultation with Mr O’Malley. It was ie it tnat tnis would be a gesture ol confidence in tbe Chinese, and would assist in creating an atmosphere favourable to the negotiations with regard to the British concession, which are now in progress. Advices from Siatgtau, in Hunan province, states that there was a- big anti-British parade here on January 16. The mob fired the Asiatic Petroleum Company’s installation, the fire destroying 2000 tins of oil and the company’s buildings. Anti-Christian agitators are rampant. Many chapels were seized and stripped of furnishings, and Bibles and tracts were torn up. EVACUATION OF PROVINCES. AMERICANS ORDERED OUT. Received 2.35 p.m. to-day. PEKING, Jan. 23. American missionaries are hastening to the coast from the interior of Fukien. It is expected that the province will be evacuated in a. fortnight. American women and children in the Foochow consular district have been advised to evacuate, but only a few British have departed., MORE TROOPS UNDER ORDERS, Received 2.35 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Jan. 23. The First Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire and: the First Border Regiment at Malta have been ordered to he ready to proceed' to China. Officers on leave have been ordered to rejoin.
