MAY ZEALAND BUTTML RE-EXPORTED FROM DENMARK. Mr. S. A. Longuet (Danish Consul at Auckland) writes to the New Zealand Herald to correct what he .states is a mis-statement reported on January 0 in an interview with Mr. tf. W. Wright, an Aucklander, who recently .returned from a trip abroad. Therein, Mr. Wright alleged that New Zealand butter was being retailed on the Home market bearing the trademarks of Danish .and English factories, and that- he had obtained information .showing that hundreds of tons of New Zealand butter went to Denmark and was sent back to England a* Danish, produce. , In hi© letter, Mr. Longuet says that he wa.s a> bit astonished at the state-
ment, and. after communicating with the Consul-Genera) in Sydney, is emphatic that Mr. Wright s assertion is entirely incorrect, for the reason only that the regulations in existence in Denmark in regard to butter-making would prevent foreign butter from being re-exported from Denmark a© Danish butter. Ail 1 Danish butter for export (tinned butter excepted) must be marked with “LOT?,” a brand ' which can be applied to Danish butter only, while all foreign butter imported into Denmark must- be marked “Edenlansk” (foreign). As the control of butter in Denmark is very effective, it could, with greatest certainty,, be stated that the butter exported from Denmark and marked with the “LOT?” brand is Danish butter, and that butter exported from Denmark and not marked “LOT?” brand (tinned butter only expected) is foreign, butter. “That: New Zealand butter should be imported into Denmark and re-exported from Denmark as Danish butter, as -assorted by Mr. Wright, therefore, is simply an impracticability. ' concludes Mr. Longuet.
