DAIRY PRODUCE BOARD.
INITIATION OF THE SCHEME. SATISFACTORY REPORT TABLED The opinion, that the Dairy Produce Board should receive considerable benefit as the result of the first-hand information gleaned by the chairman (Mr W. Grounds) during his visit of three months to London, from which he returned on Monday, was expressed by Mr T. A. Winks, one of the members of the board, in conversation with a Star reporter on Saturday. , . Mr Winks explained that the chairman’s visit to London was made with the main object of being present when the control scheme was initiated, and in his report presented to the board on Wednesdav Mr Grounds was able to intimate that the system had been inaugurated smoothly, with a good spirit prevailing between the London agency, and the wholesale merchants. “Mr Grounds’s report was thoroughly overhauled by the hoard,” continued Mr Winks.* “and it is evident our chairman has benefited by his first-hand knowledge of the working of control at the other end. The two representatives in London. Messrs W., Irons and W. C. Motion are returning to New Zealand in May, and I do not anticipate any change in no!icy until reports of their experiences are placed before the hoard. DIFFERENTIAL PAYMENT. Mr Winks added that at the next meeting attention is to he given to the important question of differential payment in respect of finest and first grade produce. “This matter cannot he settled as easily as might appear at first sight,” he said. “There is the wholo ouestion of quality to lie considered, and this has improved so much under the present arrangement that one wonders if it would not he Vetter to allow the existing conditions to npnlv rather than allow the revival- of the poor standard which sot in following the war period. Tt that- for some produce a penalty is necessary.”
