OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. “THE CROWN OF LIES.’' If, after seeing Pola Negri in “The Crown of Lies/' you don't feel the surging warmth of real romance, and if you don't walk with a regal air, it will be ibeeause you are heartless and legless. The star's new Paramount production opened last night at the Opera House, in the story, written by Ernest Vajda, notable among playwrights, Hiss Negri portrays an immigrant girl. She aspires to become a great actress and play the role of a queen. When he is not selling flivvers, Robert Ames, her “steady," puts in his time trying to persuade her to marry him. Miss Negri's chancG to play the part of a queen comes rather abruptly. Noah Beery, a suave conspirator from abroad, notes her remarkable resemblance to the missing queen of a Balkan country. Playing on her evident idealism, he arranges to impose her on the people as their ruler, seeking thereby to reap millions. The supporting programme includes “Safety First," or how to handle your car. GRAND THEATRE. HAWERA. TONIGHT. “HIGH STEPPERS.'' Under the title of “High Steppers” there comes to the screen an adaptation of the widely read Philip Gibbs novel, “Heirs Apparent.'' The story is essentially built .around the lives of modern folk, and deals with the reform of a jazz mad, party hunting younger set. “High Steppers,'' therefore, is a title that fits the theme to a nicety. Mary As tor, First National star, and Elo.yd Hughes, both of whom have long since won renown ns screen lovers, portray the leading roles, but a particularly fine .supporting oast is responsible for .some fine work. Alec B. Francis, Dolores del Rio, Rita Care we, and Clarissa Selwyn, are but a few of the celebrities chosen for prominent parts in the picture. “High Steppers” will be screened at the Grand Theatre tonight only. Commencing to-niglit will be the new serial “Tire Winking Idol” this serial will be screened at the Grand Theatre every Saturday evening. OPERA HOUSE. HAWERA. COMMENCING MONDAY EVENING WEE JACKIE HARRIS. Commencing at the Opera House on Monday evening the resident*, of Hawera will have the opportunity of seeing and hearing Master Wee Jackie Harris, of Wellington. He is the winner of over 40 gold medals, won at the Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch competitions. He is aptly described a.s New Zealand’s wonder boy. He is a singer of sweet songs, a dancer of quaint dances and is at homo on the banjo, mandolin, ukulele and other instruments. He will appear in conjunction with the picture programme for a season of six nights.
