CARELESS MOTORISTS.

NO COUBTKSIEB. The Auckland Herald reports ' that motor accidents on country roads have been disgracefully numerous during the tast few weeks, and it seems that the city motorist observes neither courtesy nor caution when he embarks on his annual tour. Risks are taken which would not be thought of in regular running about- the city and sub utbs during the year. If the holiday spirit causes motorists to relax from driving customs, speed limits will be revised and enforced to the point of oppression. There have been iscores of collisions on perfectly safe roads, and many instances of cans skidding over embankments have been reported. Practically all the accidents have been due to excessive speed. The town driver who ventures on a tour of several bundled miles does not appear to realise that lie cannot corner at 20 miles an hour in loose -shingle with the same ease as •he takes a bend in 3. super-elevated concrete road. The result is that speeds are attempted on corners which are not built to hold fast moving vehicles, and the foolish driver finds lie is over a. hank. Another" class of driver takes the doubtful precaution of rounding corners on the inside in order to keep a hold on the road. Complications follow if a car is met around the corner.

Failure to give warning of approach is another common fault of the touring motorist. It- is usual to- assume that there is no other user of the road, and the consequences are often a pninful contradiction.
