KIWI AT WELLINGTON

A resident of \V edington, while walking tfirough a city street the other night, discovered a Kiwi .about two. feet high, which he took home and .placed in his hack yard, The bird soon began burrowing for worms. \V here it ciamre from is a mystery. FIRE AT’ HAMILTON. HAMILTON, Sept. IG. A fire occurred at 11 o’clock fast night in a boot shop occupied by N. Mitchell. The outbreak was quickly suppressed. Little damage was done to the building, but the .stock was damaged to -the extent of about £I2OO. All were covered by insurance. FIRE IN TIMBER. MILL. ROTORUA, Sept. 16. The national Timber Company’s mill at Ngongotaha was completely destroyed by fire which broke out at 4.30 a.m. presumably in the neighbourhood of the moulding shed. The flames .spread with tremendous rapidity. The absence, of ■wind enabled the fire to be isolated and confined to the mill. Tlhe stock iand offices were not touched. Some seventy employees are affected. The insurances are thought' to be £6OOO. WEATHER. AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Sept. 16. A beautiful spring morning to-day changed suddenly towards noon, when heavy hail.and rain fell, followed by a. little snow, which is uncommon here. The weather has improved, but is still cold aud threatening. BUSES GOING OFF THE ROAD. WELLINGTON, Sent. 16. It is stated that fourteen of the Wellington Motor Company’s buses operating in direct competition with the trains to Island Bay, are going off the road on Sunday night, the company taking advantage of the terms of the Act which allow it to offer the.se buses to the city corporation. V SNOW IN THE. SOUTH. DUNEDIN, Sept. 16. Severe snow squalls have been experienced all over Otago, but it is not expected that any great harm will bo done to the lambing.
