OPUNAKE HARBOUR BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tho monthly meeting of the Opunake Harbour Board was held yesterday, when there were present: Messrs T. P. Haighson (chairman), C. H. Hurst, J. A. Pettigrew, T. Id. H. Sinclair, C. A: Trotter, S. 0. Watson, and H. Young. • Correspondence was received ifrom tho IT.OII. O. J. Hawken, member for the district, advising receipt of a. letter front a H.awera, firm of solicitors to the effect that a petition was to he presented to the House of Representative*., signed by 162 ratepayers of the Opunake harbour district praying that the system of voting for the election of members of the Harbour Board he amended, v and also that further loan money to the board be not authorised. As member for the district, it was incumbent upon him to present- the petition and he proposed to do so at an early date. The secretary presented a copy of his letter to Mir. T. F. Martin, solicitor, Wellington, as follows: “The Opunake Harbour Board is desirous of having a clause inserted m the Lac-al Legislation Bill in Parliament and I am instructed to inform you that the hoard desires y.ou to prepare the necessary advertisement* and clause in connection therewith. As the Drown Law Office has raised legal objection to the hoard raising the additional loan of 10 per cent., the hoard is, as per your opinion, taking this step to obtain the power required to complete a workable harbour.” It. was resolved that the chairman attend the House of Representatives to give evidence to the committee concerned in support of the board’s deWORICS COMMITTER. The Works Committee reported having made adequate arrangements for reducing the board’s staff of workmen, whereby one gang only would be employed instead of two. The foreman and blacksmith had not leceived holidays and a week’s extra pay had been awarded to each in lieu thereof. Work is proceeding satisfactorily. .Trucks bad been sold for £lO each. Rails, noints and slope rs were under offer, but had not yet been sold. The report was adopted. ft was decided to advertise the rails, points and sleepers as for sale. TENDERS EORi BUILD INO SITES. The following tenders for building sites facing the crescent were accepted: Section 6. .1. -McKinley. £5 10s; 7. E. Clare. £0 10s; 8. W. Markham to os; 10, W. H. James. £6 2s. •« FINANCE COM AF T! The hi nance Committee recommended that a complete valuation roll b--obtained, and also recommended sfrik mg a. rate of (a) 44-61 d in the £ over, the whole of the Opunake Harbour District; (b) a- rate of 2 10-61 u in -V- ---£ over the Opunake Town, District. The recommendations were adopted and Mr. Hurst gave notice of motion that the rate be struck. The secretary announced .credit, balances on Loan Accounts, £1262 7s 3d and Fund Account, £B6 16s sd.
