PAINTING TEN CARS.

A MINUTE

A MOTOR LAUNDRY,

TliOi latest invention in the American Ford motor factory is a giant machine which paints ten cars a minute. Once the cars are on a moving platformpart of the machine —they are not touched until the painting is completed. Chemical sprays first clean the bodies, after which they are washed by water sprays and dried by hot air. From this process they pass to the paifitting department. Here 15 sprays shower on paint, the surplus being carefully drained away. Again the platform carries the machines on, this time into an enormous oven 500 fqet long. By the time they reach the far end they arc perfectly dry. On the same gigantic scale there is a motor-car-', “laundry ’ ’ in New York which is,capable of thoroughly cleaning 720 machines, inside and out, in a day. Moving platforms carry the cars into a great passage lined with sprays of hot and cold water, steam, and kerosene. These sprays reach every part of the body and running gear, without injuring the inside coaehwork in the slightest. More than 30 mechanics are posted along the route of the cars, each with his special job. Two, for instance, with an air-hose of SO pounds pressure, blow the dust from the mechanism. Others look after the wheels, lights, and so on.

After the cars have been through the passage, polishers and driers finish the business, and the car is returned to its owner looking as clean and smart as when new.
