GIGANTIC LANDSLIDE.
UNUSUAL EVENT AT AUCKLAND
(BY TELEGRArH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 6. Following on heavy rain, a gigantic landslide shifted 20,000 tons of earth and rock from a reclamation earned out bv Winstones Ltd. at the head of Grafton gully, adjoining Sy monds street cemetery. After a. deafening crash the ground slipped like a huge wave and the earth settled. Little columns of steam arose, giving a. resemblance to a -scene in the thermal district. The landslide left a great crevasse close to a modern building, but, as the latter is on piles 53 feet long sunk in papa rock, it is not likely to be injuriously affected.
