ALDERMAN TRAMPLED TO DEATH
BY CABLE--PBESS ASSOCIATION —COPYBIGHT. MEXICO CITY, Aug. 4.
A general statement issued by the Roman Catholic Episcopate declares that a settlement, of the religious situation will be accepted by the Episcopate only if it includes a recognition of the rights of Catholic priests, as Mexican citizens.
This is construed in some quarters as including a demand for the right to vote at civil elections, which is denied by the present religious clauses of the constitution.
The Bishop of Tobasco, secretary of the National Episcopate, declared today: ‘‘The Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church will never approve of an armed uprising, but the church will go to Calvary, if necessary, in the present religious struggle.” Theatre proprietors and retailors generally are complaining of the effects of the Catholic boycott. Occasional disorders are reported but there is nothing on a serious scale. In the village of Chilapa, Alderman Deloya took affairs into his own hands, firing on a crowd of religious enthusiasts, who refused to leave the church dooi’.
The crowd was. peaceful enough until he suddenly opened fire, whereupon they rushed at him and trampled him to death.
