IMPORTATION OF POTATOES.
AUSTRALIA PROPOSES INCREASE OF DUTY.
BY CABLE—PBES3 ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 12.25 p.m. to-day. MELBOURNE, Aug. 5. The Tariff Board heard evidence in support of the application for an increased duty on imported potatoes from £T to £4 per ton. The board called for evidence against the application, but none was forthcoming. A deputation representing the potato of Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania waited on the Minister of Health. Sir N. R. Hawse, when reference was made to a. consignment of 25 tons of potatoes from New Zealand which was recently rejected on inspection in Melbourne and returned to New Zealand as infected with disease known as “corky scab.” It was stated that the growers were apprehensive lest the disease should he introduced into Australia. Sir N. R. Hawse replied that he would inquire into the whole question in consultation with the State authorities and make every effort to ensure that this disease would not he introduced into Australia.
