The inaugural card tournament conducted (by the Kaponga. Cycle Club was an 'Unqualified success and the club’s finances were .materially augmented thereby. There was an attendance of about GO. of both sexes, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves until nearly midnight. (During the evening supper was served by the club’s committee. The ladies prize was. won by Mrs FT J. Briggs, after a 1 ndiav-off with Mesdames Oadman and PI. .Hawke. A play-off avlas also nocesisary in the gent’s division, Mr. C. IP. Brewer winning from Mr. S. Blackwell. The prizes won by members of the club in. the series of six races recently conducted were presented by Mr. W. Miarr. president of the Kaponga Athletic Sports Club, who took occasion to remark on the wonderful success attained by the cycle club .since its ineooiion only ia few nnontbs ago. 'Mr. A. Mr. Charles B.himes, a former licensed victualler of Wanganui for many years, but now a- Wellington broker and estate agent, is paying a business visit to Kaponga.. Mr. W. Franks, a well-known settler of P.iverlea., yesterday met with a simple but somewhat .serious accident on his farm. He .slipped and fell on a. sidling .and so injured his right shoulder as to- necessitate medical attention. It .is likely that the sufferer will be incapacitated lor some time. The local, fire brigade intends holding a. wet practice at G a.m. on. Friday with the object of increasing the efficiency of several young members. The extreme mildness of winter conditions is, indicated in the fact that peach trees in this neighbourhood are already in bloom. ■ CROQUET .CLUB’S DANCE. Kaponga residents are reminded of the .grand dance to, be held' at Ivapuni to-night under the auspices of the K'sfcponga Croquet Olub. .Supper, floor and musio of the best are assured and a good attendance is confidently anticipated,.
