COAL MINES BILL

EXTENSION OF HOURS. ONLY WAY OUT DEBATE ON SECOND READING. BY* CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT; Received 1.25 p.m. to-day. LONDON, June 28. In tlie House, of Commons, Sir A. 11. Steel Maitland moved the second reading of the Coal Mines Bill, which ho described as a temporary measure to permit, not compel, an extra hour’s work daily while negotiations are being continued. He said that the miners’ leaders would! not agree to any concession recommended by the Coal Commission. The only way out that the Government could see was an extension of the hours to meet the exceptional case.

Mr Stephen Walsh moved the rejection of the Bill. Among other arguments which he advanced! was one that the Bill’s operation would entail the dismissal of one ninth of the mine workers employed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
