EMPIRE WEEK.

HOST OF ATTRACTIONS. GREAT DEPARTMENTAL DISPLAY. Preparations are proceeding apace for the great Empire Week, which, will open on Wednesday, and it is certain that- this will be the biggest feature of its kind ever seen in Hawerr. in connection with the Winter Show. The Government Departments will make remarkably fine displays, and' of these the combined Railway and Publicity exhibit of attractions in New Zealand will be prominent. Posters, published widely, contain invitations to people to travel by rail, and also set out a most interesting resume of the scenic and sporting and other attractions which r.re. available to the tourist, and which draw, and will continue to draw, hosts of people to see what New Zealand lias to offer.

OPENING ARRANGEMENTS. PUBLIC MEETING! TO-MORROW EVENING. In order to kive an opening fillip to the week and to .stress the Imperial character of the scheme, a special big meeting has been ai-ranged for tomorrow evening in the Grand Theatre, which it. is expected will be . filled to overflowing. At that meeting community’ singing will be led by the Hawera Operatic Society, under Mr. Ollerenshnw, and assisted by the Hawera Orchestral Society. Special features of the week will be the arrival by special trains, of some hundreds of farmers from the Waikato on Wednesday evening, and of thousands of school children from practically every school from Wanganui to New Plymouth and 1 Waitara, from the stations on the Whangamomona line andVm the Te Roti-Opunake line. PARLIAMENTARY PARTY. Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., who has arranged the visit of a Parliamentary party of at least. 20 members, advises that there will be twelve Reformers, and four each from the Nationalist and Labour parties. It is hoped, too, that Sir Joseph Ward will be present. The party will come on the special new sleeping car, and, if necessary, The party will live aboard the car while The party will use that car while in Hawera.

The town will be gaily and artistically decorated, greenery having been brought in from the country, and special lighting effects are being arranged by business men. In addition, the shop wiridows will be specially dressed with displays of British goods, carrying out the idea, of Empire week. Two fine street arches will add; much to the general effect. OPENING! OF THE SHOW. The official opening of the Winter Show will take place on Wednesday afternoon, at 2.15 o’clock, the ceremony being performed by the Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister in charge of publicity, who has taken a keen interest in the show and the week for the Empire. It is expected that the Hon. O. J. Hawken will also he present. . FOOTBALL ATTRACTIONS. These will be a very special feature, as, in addition to the Hawke’s BayTaranaki match on Wednesday of next week, there will be,a secondary.schools match, New (Plymouth Boys’ High School v. Wanganui Technical College, on Saturday next, and Hawera High School and New Plymouth Technical College play on the following Wednes. day.
