THE HAWERA CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT.

The annual report of the Hawera Bowling Club, to be .presented to members at the meeting next week, records a successful year, resulting in a credit balance of £79 8s sd, compared with £G7 11s 6d the previous year. Ihe report says: — During the year the club has been put to a deal of .expense, one item of £26 8s Gd for painting inside of pavilion and tea room, repairing seats and fencing? which will be non-recurring. In the Banner and Syrne Shield competitions, the club was less fortunate than last year. Two teams entered m the banner for the southern division, which was won by Manaia, West End eventually winning the finals. Ihe annual competition for the Syme Shield, played between Patea, Manaia, Park and Hawera, took place on the Hawera green at New Year, and resulted in Manaia wresting the shield fro? 1 H ; l ' wera by a narrow margin, and Manaia arc to be congratulated on theii 'win. The club competitions provided keen games, the champion singles being won bv Mr C. Robb; champion pairs by Messrs J. Winks and R. Hicks; handicap pairs by Messrs W. McDonald and Linkhom ] and the handicap singles bv Mr Geo. S. Watts. There were some fine games for the A. Buttons, but the A Ferns provided very little competition. Duriug the season the club played several inter-club matches, both on the local green and away. At the Dominion tournament, held at Dunedin, the club was represented by one rink, skipped by- Mr T. Corkill, and put up quite a good showing considering they were up against the pick of New Zealand. In the Taranaki Centre tournament the club was represented by four rinks, skipped by Messrs Foy, Robb, Corkill, and Wcstaway. Those skipped by Messrs Foy and Robb got well into post-sectional play. The South Taranaki tournament inaugurated by the Park and Hawera Clubs was held at Easter and proved a great success. Six rinks were nominated from the Hawera Club, and the final was won by Mr R. Hicks’ link, which put up a fine performance in going through the tournament without a loss. Membership has been well maintained during the season. The green super-, intendents, Messrs' Winks and McDonald, are deserving of the club’s thanks for the amount of work and time they gave to the green, and to those members wlio voluntary gave their assistance during the year the club is grateful. A word of thanks is also clue to Mr Sturroek, who kindly took the levels of the green this season and free of charge. The committee regrets having to record the deaths of Mr G. Sharp and Mr R. Wylie, both of whom were valued members of the club for several seasons.

During the year the club’s success was largely due to the assistance received from the ladies, who hospitably entertained our visitors, ancl l as a, mark of the club’s appreciation of their kindness, a complimentary social was tendered and proved an enjoyable function:
