STOCK MARKETS.

KEEN DEMAND FOR GOOD DAIRY cows. A NOTE OF CONFIDENCE. The outstanding feature of the week has been the keen demand for good grade dairy cows, as shown in several sales held by auctioneering firms, at one of which a price all round was .secured which. 1 is well in "advance oi anything seen for some years. Dairy farmers are showing a feeling of confidence and optimism about the coming season which speaks well for the future of the industry. There is* strong enquiry for good cows and heifers. It seems to indicate that they are not worrying about Control Board operations, and are satisfied that conditions are going to be good. This is a very cheering position to see. Fat cattle are coming forward in fair numbers and graziers, apparently anxious about the feed' for the winter, are showing a decided inclination to realise in case they i should be short of feed. This looks likely to create a scarcity - later on, especially in view of the number of cattle which have been sent to the works from Hawke’s Bay, where conditions were < so acute some time ago. The dairy produce market is. reported quiet, wtih a slight decline all round except in white cheese, which shows a small rise.

There is little business being done in sheep, and prices am only medium. There is apparently not much demand, and the sheep market is slo-w. Horse sales have brought out fair yardings, but the quality has not been very high, and in consequence prices have not been of much good to vendors.

The position generally in the stock: world is quiet, as might be expected at this time of the year. There are. however, bright spots, and a feeling of confidence is generally evident. In regard to horses, there is reported to be a good inquiry for milk-carters, in view of the season opening at lan early ■date, and this class of -horse apnears to be the only one for which there is much demand.
