ALTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ANNUAL HALL MEETING. The annual hali meeting was held on Monday night and, considering the adverse weather conditions, quite a satisfactory attendance was in evidence. The report for the year ended May 31 was as follows: The bank overdraft has been reduced from £55 to £22 12s 5, considerable necessary improvements have been carried out, and new crockery has been purchased for the hall. A series of entertainments were run during the year, but the net proceeds were not up to expectations. Since striking our balance £ls has been raised by pnbliq subscription, and this amount will be utilised to reduce the overdraft further. Considering the handicap the year commenced with, and the adverse weather conditions encountered practically every night an entertainment was held, the hall has had'a very satisfactorv year.

Tlie tota 1 receipts .for the year were £lO9 9s Id. The following committee was elected for the coming year: Messrs H. A. Sutherland,. chairman (re-elected), H. Palmer (re-elected). A. Neilson (reelected), J. D. Piercey (re-elected), A Scown, and L. R. Davies. secretary (re-elected). A vote of thanks was extended to Mr W. A. Allen (auditor), and he was re-elected for the ensuing year.

A vote of’ thanks was also extended to Mrs J. D. Piercey and Mrs F. Gush for their untiring assistance to the committee during the year and, as a small token of thanks, the committee asked them to accept a free pass to all functions promoted by the Hall Committee during the ensuing year. FOOTBALL. On Wednesday night a benefit dance and euchre party was held in aid of injured players. Quite a large crowd turned out, and a very pleasant evening was spent. In fact, it was quite a success except from the financial side. The expenses were too high, and the committee defeated the object in view by not watching this point. The total proceeds were £8 and the expenses amounted to £6. The prizes at the euchre party were won by Mrs J. Jones and Mr F. Gush. Mr J. Jones carried out the duties of M.C., and Air L. V. Trass (secretary) had all the working arrangements well in hand. GENERAL. Subscription lists have been opened at the Alton Dairy Co.’s store and Mr A. Hodge’s, Alton, and with Mr Jack Hurley, Hurfeyville, in aid of the widow and family of the late G. Rowland, whose death was reported in The Star on Wednesday. I would also he glad if The Star would open a list, in Hawera, as this is a really deserving case, and starvation is facing a mother and a family of six small children who have been deprived of their breadwinner. Air A. Illingworth is in the limelight again, this time winning the New Zealand championship for cheese at the Auckland Show and the Murgntroyd Cun at the Palmerston North Show. Nbihodv begrudges the popular “Arthur” his win. and Altonites are nroud of having the championship in their own district. Miss Currie is at present attached fo ttm staff of the local school during the absence of Afiss Smith, who-, I .am. sorvv to sav, is on the sick list. Air .and Airs John Proffitt, buir.. and daughter, are at present staying with M>- .T. D. Proffitt. FA nv contributions fo v the "Rowland V"Mil which may be left at The Star Office will be duly acknowledged and f-' ,-\rn rd-orl to those hnvi VI rr .con-t-rol of the monev collected in the Alton and JTu rleyvilie distriots. —Ed. 1
