PERSONAL ITEMS.

Before the commencement of the business a.t the special meeting of the Hawera Operatic Society last evening, resolutions of sympathy with the relatives of the late Messrs W. C. Hpddle and W. D. Johnson were passed in silence. The president, Mr. H. L. Sprat*, referred in eulogistic terms to the activities of Mr Hoddle as vice-president and Mr. Johnson as promoter. 'f ' Mr T. H. Geraghey, inspector of permanent way at Stratford, who is retiring from the Railway .Department on superannuation, was ~farewelled by members •of the staff at Stratford on Saturday night, representatives from Haiwera and other centres being present. Eulogistic, references were made by the speakers' concerning the guest’s long and a Ire service for the Department, his popularity, and the esteem, with which he was held bv his fellowworkers in the service and by all who. knew him.

Speaking on behalf of the New Zea-, land Government Commissioner (Mr. J. \V. Collins) at the presentation made to the 250,000 th visitor to the Government Cinema, at the Dunedin Exhibition, Mr. F. Johnston (Dunedin officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce-') paid a. high tribute to the good work done in connection with the cinema, by Mr. J. H. Horton, the officer in charge. Tn spite of the huge crowds that pass through the Government Cinema daily, it is always kept in spick and span order, and Mr. Horton and his staff, no matter how great the rush, cope with all emergencies with invariable courtesy and efficiency. Mr. Horton was formerly a resident of Hawera.

Ait the .Hawera Operatic Society’s social held last evening, opportuity was taken ,lto make a presentation to two very popular memibern who- are shortly to be ma tried!—Miss D. Mach in. and Mr. W. M. Thomas. The president, Mr. H. L. Sprat*, said that it was through the N aegis of the society that Miss Maehin and Mr. Thomas had been brought together. Mists Maehin had' been one of the early members' of the society and hrad filled principal parts in all the productions with conspicuous success; while Mr. Thomas had Ven associated with the last- two productions. Mr. Sipratt made a prasentation of a handsome pair of serviette rings. Mr. Thomas suitably replied on behalf of jffijjs Maehin and himself.
