In the presence of Mr J. A. Spencer, the former geologist of the Anglo-Per-sian Oil Company, operating in Papua and ex-German New Guinea, the bore of the old Taranaki Oil and Freehold Company, situated at Vo gelt own, near New Plymouth, was opened on Tuesday. Oil could be seen 18 feet from the surface, and samples were taken. Negotiations have been entered into, and it is believed that if reports are favourable a company may be floated shortly. The lime was closed in 1909 through lack of funds, although indications were for a successful enterprise. Mr Spencer has returned to Auckland, where he will make an analysis of his samples.
