At their conference -technical school teachers resolved to recommend that the Education Department put into operation a system of technical college examinations and certificates, this system to include a filial examination and diploma, that on completion of a satisfactory course of technical college and on production of trade evidence, the student- be allowed to sit for a diploma examination, .lit was further decided: “That while the public service is the recognised entrance to the Government service, the controlling authority -should provide alternative papers in arithmeticand science covering -a syllabus suitable for engineering students.’’ NOT TO DRIVE FOR SIX MONTHS. GISBORNE, Jan. 22. Mrs Anne McLean was charged with driving in a manner dangerous to the public. She had her motor license cancelled for six months, but no penalty was imposed. The magistrate held that there was no recklessnes-s in her driving, hut the defendant had lost her nerve in an emergency and kecked- two loot passengers over.

INFANT CHILD’S DEATH. AUCKLAND. Jan. 22. A baby girl, nin e months old, fell out of a' basinette yesterday afternoon and was killed. When the mother, Mrs Mary Blair, went to see the child she foil fid it suspended bv its gown with its feet- just touching th P floor. A doctor found that the child’s neck had been I broken. At the inquest- a verdict of accidental death was returned. MATERNITY HOSPITAL OPENED. WAIPUKURAU, Jan. 22. Central Hawke’s Bay was visited yesterday bv Sir Maui Romaic. His lastact as ‘Minister for Health was the opening of the Rathbone Maternity Hospital at Waipawa, costing £BOOO. The sum of £6OOO was promised by the trustees of the will of the late Airs Lizzie Rath bone, and a Government subsidy. Th? Hospital Board is also living the foundation stone yjf the nurses’ home, adjacent to the Waipuku•au Hospital, costing £IO,OOO. Dr. Valintine, Director-General of Health, was also present.

HOTEL AT KUMAR.A BURNT. HOKITIKA. Jan. 22. The Junction Hotel at Kumara, opposite the railway 'station, was burnt to the ground at 3.30 o’clock this morning. Practically nothing wars saved. The Kumara Railway station was badly scorched. The insurances are not available. TWO ATEN HURT IN MOTOR CYCLE ACCIDENT. PALMERSTON N., Jan. 22. Two young men named James Nason and William McMinn, residents of Feathemton. were riding a motor cycle on their wav to a sports meeting at Ashhurst. when the cycle swerved and got out of control near the bridge at Woodville. The riders came off. Nason sustained a broken leg, and McMinn received injuries to his knee. Both, men were admitted to hospital.
