MENTAL DEFECTIVES

Replying to a letter published in The Times by eminent physicians and surgeons, who drew attention to the alarming increase in mental defectives, which was, they said, mainly hereditary, and in which they advocated legislation to prevent the defectives propagating. other eminent doctors representing the Mental Welfare Association assert that sterilisation would not touch the problem, because most of the defectives were born of sound parents. Secondly, sterilisation would produce a serious social evil, especially through the victimisation of defective women and girls. They conclude that segregation is the only remedy that will safeguard both the defectives and the comm unit v.—Times.
