THE CHOSEN TWO. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. J DUNEDIN, Nov. 24. The Rhodes scholars chosen by the Committee of Selection to-day are: M. Barak, B.Sc.; C. E. Low, B.A. Both are from Canterbury College. Montefiore Barak was born on September 18, 1904, and was educated at the Warea school, Taranaki, from 1910 to 1916, at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School from 1916 to 1921, and at Canterbury College since 1922. In 1916 he was dux of the preparatory school at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School. In 1917 he gained a junior national scholarship, and in 1919 he won a senior national scholarship. During each year from 1916 to 1921 he won the first prize of his form, and in 1921 was dux of the school.

While at the high school Mr Barak was twice a member of the shooting team which won the Weekly Press Shield, and was in turn a member of the school’s third, second and first Rugby fifteens. In his first year (1922) at Canterbury College, Mr Barak passed the first section of his B.Sc., which he completed in 1924. In 1924 be also won the Sir _ George Grey scholarship. At the university he continued to play Rugby, and in 1924 was the captain of the second fifteen and in 1925 a member of the first fifteen. He was also chosen as an emergency' for the New Zealand University team to play Sydney University. He also represented Canterbury College in its shooting team at the annual inter-university tourneys in 1914. He was gazetted second lieutenant of the New Zealand Engineers in 1925. He was president of the College Students’ Association and chairman of the New Zealand University tournament committee. In sport Mr Barak’s interests have been chiefly confined to football, shooting and tennis, but he has also taken part in athletics and boxing. Charles Eugene Lpw, who was born on March 9, 1903, attended the Opawa primary school from 1908 till 1916, the Christchurch Boys’ High School from 1917 till 1921, and Canterbury College from 1922 till 1925. At the High School Mr. Low secured a number of form prizes; in 1920 he passed his matriculation, and in 1921 he secured a higher leaving certificate. In swimming and running Mr. Low won practically everything to be won at the school. In 1918 he established a record for boys under sixteen, and in 1919 established records in the intermediate championship of New Zealand in the 220yds. and 880yds. In 1923, his second year at Canterbury College, Mr. Low won the John Connel scholarship for Latin, English, and French, and in 1924 he completed his B.A. His record in swimming and athletic events is a splendid one. In 1924 he was champion swimmer of the college, was a member of the first Rugby fifteen, and the winner of four or five athletic championships. He represented Canterbury at the Dominion athletic championships at Wanganui, and was second in the 440 yards hurdles and second in putting the .shot. At the New Zealand University tournament at Wellington he won four events and secured a trophy for the highest number of points at the meeting. In athletics, football, ond swimming Mr. Low has few equals at Canterbury College, and has been outstanding in all the important branches of college life. The other candidates were Messrs A. J. Gray, B.A. (Auckland), W. G. Kalaugher, B.Sc. (Auckland), F. R. Leonard,, B.Sc. (Gtago), J. C. J. Malfroy, LL.M (Victoria), J. B. McMiken (Otago), and. R. R. T. Young, B.Sc. (Victoria). '
