ENTERTAINMENTS

ENTERTAINMENTS. OPERA HOUSE, TO-NIGHT. POL A NEGRI IN “EAST OF SUEZ.” Miss Pola Negri’s latest Paramount, “East of Suez,” a Raoul Walsh production, is the feature at the Opera House this evening. The screen play, written by Sada Cowan, from Somerset Maugham’s stage success, lias for its background China—with all its romance and mystery and lurking perils. The star is east as a beautiful young English girl, daughter of a. British Consular agent iiving in Shanghai. Daisy has been away at school in England since she was eight years old. In all this time she has not seen her father. She returns only to be greeted with the news of his death and, what Is probably more heartrending, that she ,is the daughter of English and Chinese parents —a half-caste. The part provides Miss Negri with a splendid vehicle to display her great talents.

OPERA HOUSE—TO-MORROW EVENING. “WONDERFUL LONDON.” A SUPERB FEATURE. It is the Englishman’s (or, to he more “embracing,” may we say Britisher’s) prerogative to remain “unmoved” and undemonstrative in the face of scenes or occasions that would stir other nationalities to a demonstration of enthusiasm or feeling, but no Englishman or any man with a drop of English blood in his veins could fail to be moved or betrayed into a demonstration of approval and pride at the thrilling sequence of intensely interesting and absorbing events in the latest and greatest of British film productions, “Wonderful London,” which will be presented at the Opera House to-morrow (Thursday) evening. Mr Graham Wilcox, the producer of “Wonderful London,” may be termed a wizard, for he has imbued this remarkable picture with the very spirit of the great city. The quality, magnitude and artistic treatment of the subject place this great feature in a clas's by itself. The producer has adopted 'many novel methods of introducing “atmosphere.” Imagine the characters of Dickens on a motor ’bus. with Pickwick at the wheel, conveying Grandfather. Little Nell, David Copperfield, Fagin, the Artful Dodger and Quilp on a trip to Wembley. Another novelty in the matter of treatment is to place the audienpe in the hands of a London ’bus driver of the old school, a man who knows his London as few others do, and who pilots his ’bus and the audience into all sorts of out-of-the-way places that hold a tremendous interest. All the glamour, all the charm, all the wonderful atmosnhere of London have been, caught by the camera and held; all that makes London all that it is and all that it means to British people all over the world is there and is palpable Intending patrons are advised to book their seats at Mrs Cook’s, where the box plans for the limited season are now open.

EMPRESS PICTURES, MANAIA. TO-MORROW NIGHT. Pile Last of the Duanes,” with the famous Fox star, is a picturisation of Znno Grey’s tale of the same name, with scenes laid in Texas in the days of border outlawry. Tom Mix has never been seen to better advantage m a Western role than in his portraval of Buck Duane, son of a feudist. " This young man. refused to light until forced to kill a man in self-defence. He then becomes an outlaw until, thiough the love of a girl, he receives a pardon, on condition that he helps to clean up a band of cattle thieves. "The Last of the Duanes* * "will be screened for one night onsly.
