A marked increase in solar activity is reported by Mr. G. V. Hudson, of Ivarori, Wellington. He states that a very extensive group of sunspots is noiv visible near the eastern limb of the sun, and is favourably placed for observation during the early part of this week. There has beem great solar activity for some time past and the sun’s disc has' not been clear of sunspots since August 17. “The amount of unemployment in England is saddening,” remarked. Archdeacon Julius, of Timaru, who has returned to Wellington by the lonic from a visit to Great Britain. “The saddest aspect of the problem is the spirit of hopelessness which pervades the people. The condition of trade is such that the workers cannot be paid sufficient wages in order to get enough to eat. The real fact of the matter is that many of the workers are inefficient because they are not fed enough. The result has been that a spirit of hopelessness has settled upon the people, who, as it were, have got into a vicious circle through being unable to see any escape from their hapless condition.
