FALL OF EARTH.

A TUNNELLER KILLED. { (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ' AUCKLAND, Nov. 24. Owen Ward, aged 45, who was employed in railway tunnel construction near St. Heller’s Bay by the Public Works Department was killed at 12.30 a.m. by a fall of earth in the tunnel. Ward was got out quickly by his mates. A doctor was summoned, but life was extinct. There were about five men in the tunnel when about twenty tons of papa, mostly huge boulders, fell, completely burying Ward, who had gone on shift half-an-hour previously. The other four working in the tunnel were F. Barett (shift boss), N. McDonald, N. Souter, and J. Priavach. They heard the cracking of the timber in time to run clear and escaped uninjured. They immediately set about uncovering Ward, and got him out after twenty minutes’ work. He spoke to his rescuers before he died.
