Numbers of “walking-stick” insects have been found in Hawera of late, a very large specimen being found in High Street Wept, and another on a shop window near the centre of the townto “Walking-stick” insects were numerous in this district when the bush, was plentiful, but with the disappearance of the forest they have become scarce. The insect is absolutely harmless, but as protection .from its enemies it possesses the ability to remain perfectly still, its appearance thus being similar to that of a twig. The inseeto will take on the colour of the wood on which for the time being they are living, and consequently are either brown or green, as the occasion demands. As they can only crawl, it is unite possib’e that the specimens found in the tow n were transported hence in the greenery used for decorating the town during Winter Show Week. .Misery from corns Progandra cures them; 1/6. —Advt.
