JERSEY CATTLE.

STRATFORD CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING.

Yesterday, at Stratford, the annual meeting of the Stratford Jersey Cattle Club was held, Mr. 1). O’Sullivan (president) being in the chair. There was a good attendance of members. The annual report was as During the year ended June 30, 1925, five meetings of memebrs and twelve meetings of the committee have been held. Thirteen new members have been enrolled and three resignations accepted. Th e amount received for subscriptions during the year was £sl, behig equivalent to 68 financial members. The membership roll stands at 103, from which it will be seen that a large number of members are still outstanding with their subscriptions. The First Futurity Stakes was successfully concluded at the 1924 Stratford Show, nine animals being exhibited for the final, Mr. F. W. Cornwall being the owner of both first and second winning animals. A total of £ll3 was received for distribution amongst the prize-winners, after allowing for the amount of expenses to be deducted. The Second Futurity Stakes was launched early in the year, and produced an entry of 84 animals; the fees charged for nomination and acceptance were considerably reduced for this competition, and it is expected this will be th e means of a good many more animals entering for the final in 1927. It is hoped that the coming year will show added interest in the affairs of the dub, and that members will bring forward any matters which they consider of benefit to the Freed and members generally; these can be discussed, and, if thought advisable, sent forward to the .Provincial Council, and from there to the Dominion Council. The balance-sheet .showed that the club was in a healthy financial position. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr. D. O'Sullivan; vice-president. Mr. E. FI Linnell; committee, Messrs H. Hunt, D. P Malone, O. McAloon, AY. Johnson, and C. Clemow (subject to lus consent); delegates to the provincial council, Messrs D. O’Sullivan, E. H. Linnell, and. FL. Hunt; auditor, Mr. •>, H. Thompson. ■'fiic .secretary was voted the same honorarium as last year. The resignations of, Messrs. J. Huggins and \Y. Taylor were received with regret. RESERVE FUND.

A resolution was carired recoinniendiim- th e provincial council to reduce fees to half of the present amount, in moving the resolution Mr. E. K. Linnell (Midhirst) said the council was building up a large reserve arid, doing nothing with it to help individual breeders. The fee was necessary, lie maintained, at the beginning of the movement, but now it would be opportune to reduce and help breeders. Mr. FI. Hunt (Stratford) said be would prefer some of the funds allocated to creating subsidies on prizes ioi Jersevs at the A. and P. shows. Mr! D. Malone (Kaponga) considered some of funds could -he used . o assist in reducing the cost of insuring valuable animals. . Mr. K. Tarrant (Ngaero) said would" prefer to see a reduction of test. ini'- lees, espeeiallv for first cows. Breeders .should help themselves and not look to the Government for everything. The motion was carried. ASSISTANCE IN TESTING.

Mr. C Jackson moved that tlie New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders l>o asked to pay half the cost of testing the lirst cow in semi-official testing or pedigree cows. He believed they were only asking for a fair thing, for there was no doubt that the .high cost of testing the first cow was a very heavy burden, especially on young breeders. The Government could not reduce its fees and run the semi-official test without a loss. . , After some discussion m favour or the proposal the motion was unanimously adopted. “That is a. remit I would like to see go forward,” said Mr. Hunt, when the secretary read a. remit to be presented by the New Plymouth club at the meet, ing of the provincial council. The remit was to the effect that the council ho urged to insist on all pedigree Jerseys being branded before registration, and with a view to ensuring that this would be clone the council be urged to make an inspection of herds, and where animals were found unbranded after registration such registrations ho cancelled. In according his support to the pronosal, the president -said he would tike to go even further and try to get the tattoo or fire brand enforced. The meeting decided to support the remit. GENERAL.

The matter of arranging special classes for the show was left to the committee. It was decided to purchase an enlarged photograph of the club’s late president (Mr. F. Hanford), to be hung in the board room as a memento of the valuable work he had done in the interests of the breed and the club. The president announced that it was intended to ask the Stratford A. and P. Association to donate a shield for competition among school children interested in the classes promoted hv tho association The shield was to ho known as the Hanford Memorial .Shield in commemoration of th e great interest the late Mr. Hanford had taken in the work of the children.
