TENDER LET

AUTOMATIC EQUIPMENT.

HAWERA’S EXCHANGE,

PUSHING ON THE WORK,

FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY REPORTER WELLINGTON, July 22

The Secretary of the Post Office states that a. tender lias been accepted for the installation of a new automatic telephone .exchange at Hawera, and the installation work will commence as soon as sufficient supplies' of equipment comes to hand.

FURTHER PARTICULARS,

THE POSITION IN THE DOMINION

So far no further particulars are to hand, said the Postmaster in reply to a Star inquiry in regard to the establishment of the automatic exchange for Hawera. He said he knew that for a considerable time Hawera had been on the list for next installation, and, in fact, he believed that arrangements had been made for early acceptance of a contract before he arrived in Hawera some months ago. 'Wellington had just been completed, and arrangements were made a few days ago for the final “cut over.” Dunedin was rapidly approaching completion, and so it looked as though the way was open for getting on to the Hawera contract and pushing it through rapidly. The Postmaster added that he understood supplies were to be secured in Australia, where the contractors for the work had a branch. This meant that there would not be a great delay in securing the necessary supplies, and another fact that meant rapid completion was that the necessary accommodation in the post office had been arranged when the last alterations were made.

It was difficult to say exactly how long the work would take, but an indication might be gathered from the knowledge that Palmerston North occupied two years and Hawera. exchange was roughly half the size of the former place. Appearance, however, would indicate that when once the work is commenced it can be pushed ahead rapidly. In any case it would be very interesting to people of town and district to learn that a definite move had been made and that they could look forward to having the automatic installed at a comparatively early date.
