EMPIRE BEFORE RUSSIA.
LABOUR DELEGATE’S ADYICE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, July 11. Clashes between extremists and moderates are marking the Trades Union Congress at Blackpool. Mr. Pollitt was greeted with cries of “Bah” when he asserted that the overthrow of capitalism involved war and not peace. Mr. Pollitt taunted the congress with running away from Socialism. He urged diplomatic recognition of Russia and granting her trade credits. Colonel John Ward, M.P., in a vigorous reply, said Russia had such resources that she would become the richest country in the -world if she had good government, but not with Tsarish autocracy or the present hellish Moscow distatorship. Russia was suffering from anarchy and Sovietism. He added: “Let us develop the Empire and not send money to a country whose Government puts every obstacle to our trade and diplomacy.”
Colonel Ward had a sudden heart attack after his dramatic speech and had to be conveved to London.
