£40,000,000 EXPECTED-. COOLIDGE ON ECONOMY. WASHINGTON, June 23. President Coolidge, addressing the Government’s busines s organisation, made the following striking statement : “We are seeking to let wage-earners keep more for themselves. Governmental extravagance violates the fundamental conceptions of every kind of American institution. “In four years the Budget system has reduced annual expenditure to t 2,081,G0G,000d0l (about £416,200,000), and has decreased the public debt by 3,426,000,000d0l (about £685,200,000). Economy in Government costs is inseparable from tax reduction, which, above all stimulates business.” Mr. Coolidge announced that there would lie a surplus of 200,000,000d0l (about £40,000.000) at the end of the fiscal vear. and predicted a surplus ot 290.000,000d0l (about £58,000,000) next vear.
