KEEP IT DARK.
STORY OF POL Alt TRIP. WASHINGTON, June 27. An open quarrel has arisen between the Secretary for the Navy (Mr. Curtis Wilbur) and Professor Donald McMillan (commander of the newest American Polar expedition, which sailed from Boston yesterday). Professor McMillan declined to take naval radio equipment, so Mr. Wilbur sent a peremptory message to Commander Byrd, who is in charge of the seven naval lliers and three 'planes attached to the expedition, instructing him to discard the commercial equipment and to substitute naval radio. The destroyer Putnam left Boston today in pursuit of the McMillan party, and with orders to place the new outfit aboard the expedition’s vessel at Sydney (Nova Scotia), the first port of call. Professor McMillan wants to keep the expedition in communication with the public by selling stories of the trip to newspapers, while the Secretary for the Navy insists on official secrecy being observed.
