The weekly luncheon of the Hawera Rotary Club was held to-day, Dr. WM. Thomson' (president) in the chair. The, guest and also the speaker of the day was the Hon. G. M. Thomson, M.L.C., father of the president of the club. Mr. Thomson, who is a distinguished scientist and author of a number of works of a scientific nature dealing with the New Zealand conditions in regard to particular subjects, spoke of the fishing industry in New Zealand. This subject is one that Mr. Thomson has been deeply interested in for many years, and. being in constant and close touch with the Governments of the day and the Marine Department, it is not too much to say that he has had a great deal to do with the progress so far made in the development of what should become a great industry one of the Rotarian auditors pithily commenting upon it as a source' of health as well as of wealth. Mr. Thomson was the founder, and for some years chairman, of the Marine- Hatchery Board, and, apart from his scientific knowledge of the subject, has acquired a great store of information on the practical and commercial sides of sea fisheries. The address was not only informative and interesting, but was convincing, and the speaker was thanked heartily for directing attention to a subject of much greater national value than might appear at first sight. The soloist of the day was Rotarian F. W. Sutton.
