WAR IN MOROCCO
NOT A MINOR EXPEDITION. SERIOUS MATTER TO FRANCE. WHAT THE TIMES SAYS. 67 CABLE—PRES 3 ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT. (Received July 10, 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 9. The Times, in a leader, states: “General Naulin’s Moroccan appointment is an indication to the world that the campaign against the Riffs is not a minor colonial expedition, but war on a considerable scale. It took France 40 years to subdue Algeria, and she is apparently ready to devote ns much time and energy as may l>e necessary to pacify and protect the whole of that part of Morocco for which she is responsible.”-—Times.
RIFF OFFENSIVE STOPPED
THEIR FORCES SHATTERED. HEAVY LOSSES REPORTED. LONDON, July 8. The Paris correspondent of the Daily Chronicle states the Riffian offensive on the Taza sector, which lasted, two days, has been shattered. Columns of the enemy again and again stormed the French positions at Babtaza, but always met deadly fire, until they fled helte'r skelter, the French throwing squadrons of Spahis against the disheartened enemy. For the first time in the campaign the arme blanche had a chance. The Spahis rode full tilt at the flying enemy, sabring their rear. Many Riffians threw, away their rifles to flee, but the Spahis overtook them, and those who did not fall to French sabres were hurled into a ravine by the rush of the charging squadrons. Hundreds of Riffian dead mark the line of their flight. Road communication between Taza and Fez has been re-established.
BRITAIN WTLL KEEP OUT. LONDON, July 9. The British Note to Madrid regarding Tangier will indicate Britain’s intention to avoid entanglement in the Moroccan imbroglio or any action at Tangier which might give Abd el Krim a pretext to challenge the neutrality of the international zone.
