MANAIA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) RETURNED SOLDIERS’ BALL. The Mannin- Returned Soldiers’ annual ball, which was lield in the Town Hall last evening, was a great success. Visitors were present from all parts of Taranaki, a faint 200 couples taking part in the dancing. The hall was elaborately decorated, the entrance presenting the appearance of an entrance to a beautiful shrubbery. The hall appealed to all a s a fairyland; from the ceiling hung a red dome, from which multi-coloured streamers radiated in all directions, interspersed with lights of different colours. The decorations presented a striking effect, especially in the novelty dances. The stage was also worthy of special mention, being most artistically decorated, as also was the gallery. These decorations were in the hands of Airs. D. Mitchell; the work at the entrance to the hall was carried out bv Mr. Crawford AVatson and help, and the decorations in the hall hv the returned soldiers. The supper-rooiu ancl tables were also worthy of special praise. Alesdames T. Hotter and Simmoiuls had charge of thi<. department. The supper was first-class, and credit is tine to the ladies in charge of their respective departments and their assistants, namely, Airs. A. J. Hansen (trifles) Airs. James Hickey (salad), and Mrs. E. Vine (sandwiches).. First-class music was supplied by Air. Newberry’s professional orchestra, which gave every satisfaction. Encores were the order of the evening. Numerous extras were played. The Al’s.C. were Messrs L. "Walters. L. Simmons. S. Greaves, S. .Blair, and K. Murray, who gave entire satisfaction and dij their best to make the function enjoyable to everyone. The grand march was led hv Lieut.-Colonel Sutherland and Mrs. Sutherland. The different committees are to he heartily congratulated on the results of their efforts which were a credit to them. Special mention is certainly due to the energetic secretary. Mr. S. Blair, for the able manner in which lie carried out his many duties. The returned soldiers are to he complimented on the success of this year’s function.
