FOOTBALL.

1 XTEREriT! NO POSITION

THREE TEAMS LEVEL

More interest’ than usual was manil'*‘sioil iu Llie* meeting of City A and O’hangai because of the fact that on it, depended largely the result of the competition lor the banner. Last week the City team, level, with Fraser Hoad, had just managed to stave o(1 a fierce challenge ironic the latter, and consequently they were leading by two points.' That left Ohamgai second, ecpial with the Road team, and as the latter won their match on Tuesday against Tokaora their members, in common with all the members ot the other teams, looked with interest for the match on Wednesday, which was either to keep City ahead or to make all three level. And the hitter result eventuated, for in a csirenuoiisly contested nialcii the men from Ohangai fiut one across their City Iriends. t use a n expressive trench phrase, and during the most oi the second spell, when playing with the wind, scored freely ami frequently. Ciitv was a milch lighter teaim and had not the ghost of a resemblance to the team that “shook up” Fraser Road a week ago. The forwards were good and keen spasmodically and could not keep up the pressure, while Ohangai when they changed went lor the goal line with a vim that was irresistible. With their extra weight, and with the wind behind them, they frequently ran clean through their opponents. .Hunt, Wills, Milne and, m the “rough stuff" especially, Gardener, the lock and the “Porter'"' ot the team, all worked hard and were m nearly every rush. City vanguard appeared to have lost their dash, t hough, Craighead, .Foster and • UoresImrgh toiled hard to avert defeat. Rut the City backs were outclassed too, though they were playing -behind a beaten pack, and consequently under a severe' handicap. Ohangai backs got their opportunities in the second spell and made the most of them. Gane.tit, behind the scrum, played a lino game and opened play out well. And the rest co-operated and many of their passing rushes were very good indeed. Several of them, notably Wards. Canterbury, H. Flinga and Tids-well have a fair turn oil speed and on occasions rail away from the - opposing back-. Wards' play was specially effective, and he made the most of his speed and showed a cleverness that stood him in good stead several times. Tidswell. also was very successful. and played well. His score was the iesult of a nice piece- of work." hlawkeu did well at host five-eighth, and Ills try when he fooled the opposing defence and got through was specially clever. Lee came to light with a place kick which was very serviceable to his side.

For City Purser was shaping just as well as ever when he was hunt and played the rest of the game, under a severe handicap. It was distinctly had luck for his side. The threequarters were tillable to make use of the advantage they had in the first spell, and iu the second they received none. Loader played a great game and was the heart and soul of the defence and initiated several attacking movements ail so. His kicking was extremely useful and his convension of a- penalty near the slide line was u fine piece of work. Coburn played because the’ team was short, hut his leg .still troubled him. He. however, did a great deal of saving work and proved iris usefulness time and again. The match was 1 watched with keen interest by a large number of is-pectators from locally, from Ohangai. and from other parts. The result meant a great deal to the other teams, and interest is now keyed up to a high pitch.
