EXTRA EDITION.

EGMONT RACES.

FIRST DAY’S SPORT.

Racing at Hatwera yesterday was of a very interesting nature, the fields being large and the finishes close. t while the extent to. which the winners 7 were concealed may be ascertained from the fact that only one first favourite won. Indeed, the finishes were a tribute to the work oi the handicap per, Mr. H. Chyle. There was one first taovuri.te, however, that' did not run at all. Rafa., Income and Avonlea were left when the barrier rose at the commence men t of the Flying, Rafa- carrying about 250 tickets more than, the second favourite, Lady Bentinc-k. It might also be mentioned that when the. “tote ’ closed the machine showed Rafa. as the third favourite, but in the final adjustment the total invented on (frays mount doubled.

There were some unfortunate spills in the Hack Steeplechase Handicap, six horses falling and two jockeys, C. Ma.;on and W. Easton, being removed to hospital .with, broken collarbones. Active fell at the initial jump and broke a. leg, and Objector fell oyer him. White Ranger fell after going half a mile, while Parana fell in front of the stand/ and broke its back. Big Gun also fell and Sap..saline fell at the last jump. Both Active and Parana were destroyed. The track irae in excellent order after previous rain, and throughout the day the weather remained beautifully mild. The atendance at the course was good, the gate receipts being greater than those of the first day last year, indicating increased patronage. Betting was brisk, the totalizator handling £20,810 as against £23,145 on the corresponding day of last year, a decrease of £2335. It must be reinembered. however, that last year one of the races wars run in two divisions, and the machine therefore operated for

eight races as against seven yesterday. All appointments at the course were I in excellent order, thank'--' the care and attention given them by Mr. A. Morse, and all arrangements in connection with the secretarial work were capably directed by Mr. V. B. Stratton. An enjoyable musical programme was rendered by the Hawera Municipal Band, under Lieut. Fox. Concluding results: TAWHITT HACK HANDICAP, of 175 sovs. ; .second horse to receive 30 ■sovs., and third hor.se 10 sovs. out of the stake. Right and a half furlongs. 4 Mr. J. B. Gaisford’s b.g. ' Rowley carried about £SO more than Troilus- for the Tawhiti Hack, while Rehutai and Euphonium also carried strong support. From a good start Riehutai began, best, and Jed Troilus and Euphonium passing the stand. Going up the hack stretch Rehutai led from Roosevate, with Troilus and Euphonium next. Rehutai led Roosevat.e into the straight, and in the run to the post a great race took place, Euphonium, just lasting long enough to hold off Troilus-, with Rowley close up. Time, 1.50 3-5.
