OPERA HOUSE. “JOE.” The great Australian picture “Joe/’ by Beaumont Smith, commenced a twonight season at the Opera House last evening. -It is a story of colonials, o) colonial cities, and the glorious free lit© of Australasia. “Joe” is Beaumont Smith’s latest Australian comedy drama, and is based on Henry Lawson’s book, “Joe Wilson and His Mates.” “Joe” is just a- colonial man who marries a colonial girl, and they take up a farm section, finally achieving comfort and success alter many hard and bitter struggles. Interwoven with their romance is another lovo story which does not run so smoothly OPERA HOUSE—RACE NIGHT. “STTER LOCK HOLMES.” The world-famous detective story “Sherlock Holmes,” with its stirring episodes and numerous thrills, is to he screened at the Opera House on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The role of “Sherlock Holmes” is in the safe hands of John Barrymore, idol of England’s stage. A private screening of the picture revealed the fact that no finer personality over graced the screen.' The assurance with which he tackled the many and dangerous problems was, L> say the least, inspiring. Amusement seekers are looking forward with expectancy to this remarkable picture. THE GRAND. TO-M ORROW EVENING. “The Roughneck,” tho William Fox special production which opens at the Grand to-morrow evening, the first race night, is a screen version of the well-known novel b.V Robert W. Service. The action of the first part of the story takes place in San Francisco. Tho main sequences, however, are laid in the South Sea- Islands. Tho character portrayal of John Moon by George O’Brien is said to be a superb piece of acting, and his physical prowess and pleasing personality add much to the interpretation. He is ably supported by Billie Dove and an excellent cast. Other films to he shown include a comedy “Milk Bandits” and Fox News. The season is limited to two nights.
