NOTES ON THE R ACING

(Bv Telegraph.—Special to Star). HASTINGS, May 8

The autumn meeting of the Hawke’s Ba.v Jockey Club was opened in fine hut very cold weather. In consequence of the presence of'Gloaming' and The Hawk, there was a .large attendance, which was shown by an increase in the totalisator investments of .£5446. The track is very hard and rough, there being many bare patches caused by grass being burned off by motor-cycle racing a few days ago. Gloaming'duly won the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, but, as anticipated, be had to establish a race record to do so. He won in good style, but did not pull up too well. \Y. H. Jones, the Auckland lightweight, earned the displeasure of the stewards, and was awarded a three months’ suspension for interference when riding Lin Arlington in the Nursery Handicap. Little River was an odds-on favourite for tlife Mangatarata Hurdles, with Asleep, Master Peter and Good Mark fairly well supported. Asleep, Kenyon, Suspicion and Little River were the early leaders, but Asleep fell at the second fence, and Suspicion led down the straight from Mahia, Good Mark and Little River. Master Peter ran past Little River in the back straight, and Good Mark had closed on Suspicion ancl Mahia at the last fence, but blundered and interfered with Mahia. Suspicion went on to win by two lengths from Mahia, witli Good Mark four lengths away third. Two lengths away came Master Peter, with Little Kivor and Kenyon following at intervafs.

Serene was hacked as the best of the good things in the Longlands Welter, with Gauntlet second choice, but everything was paying a price bar the favourite. Chaplin, tile winner, returned over double figures. Sattano delayed the start, and Killock led out from Gauntlet. Serene, Mixed Heather and Jubilee. Killock was still’in front going down the back from Jubilee, Merekara, Gauntlet. Cnrniola and Serene. Sottnno moved up round the top turn, and was bandy to the leaders at the bend, where, in a bunched field, there was some scrimmaging. Chaplin shot out at the distance, and, going on, won by a kuigbh and a half from Sottnno, with General Carrington three lengths away third. Haligan was fourth, with Jubilee, Wristlet and Gauntlet next. The judge placed Serene, fourth, but he was well back, being one of the victims of the scrimmage at the turn.

Gold flux was a little better backed than Shirley in the Nursery Handicap, with Berinthia a decided third choice, and Standard and Liu Arlington were both at remunerative prices. Berinthia and War Kit were slow out of the harrier. and Standard, Shirley, Gold Box, Bank Draft and Lin Arlington were bunched to the turn, where they were joined by Berinthia. tin a good race home Standard and Lin Arlington were awarded a dead heat, with Shirley a length away third. Gold Box was a good fourth, and Bank Draft next. Berinthia would have been hard to beat with an equal despatch. After the race an inquiry was held into the interference at Ihe turn, and it was decided to alter the judge’s placing,s to Standard I, Shirley 2, Gold Box 3, and Lim Arlington 4. W.. IT. Jones, the rider of the last-named, was suspended for three months for altering his line when only one length in front of his field.

Gloaming was opposed .by Mimetic and Runriymede in the Hhwke’s Bay

Stakes, on which less than £340 was invested on the “tote,” Gloaming’s price being as usual. He was given a great reception on going out to canter and later when coming back to the scales. Mimetic led Gloaming’ and Runnymede on terms for half the journey, and then Gloaming went on to Mimetic. The latter was first beaten, and Runnymede was also under presell re, but he hung on well, however, and in the end Gloaming, hard held, beat him by half a length, with Mimetic a little over a length away third. Gloaming was a little distressed on returning to scale. After the race the president of the c-lub, Air J. H. Golbourne, congratulated Air G. D. Greenwood, and Aliss Russell decorated the mount. The race was run in record time.

The Hawke's Bay Cup was a. goo'll betting race. Haze, Tanadees, Quiescent-, Fool’is Paradise and Simonette being well backed in that order. Fool’s Paradis© was the first to break the line, but at the stands Scotch Mixture lmd taken charge from Fool’s Paradise, Bonena, Kilfaire and Polly Peachum, with Quiescent last. Scotch Mixture was still in front of Haurangi, Simonette and, Fool’s Paradise turning into the back stretch, but half a mile from home Kilfaire took the lead from Haurangi,- Simonette and Haze. Kilfaire went on to win by a length from Haze, with Quiescent, which was last at the burn, a length and a half away third. Bonena was iai close fourth, and then came Haurangi. Fool’s Paradise a,lid Simonette. Newbury King was a little more than even money favourite for the Poukawa Handicap, with Star Shell, Pantagruel and Huikia.i next best backed. > Tutankhamen led Minstrel Boy, Stair Shell. Huikai, Pantagruel and Newbury King to the turn. Pamtiagruel came, through on the inside in the straight, and ini a great finish Pantagruel beat Huikai by a neck, with Newbury King a head away third. Tutankhamen was a close fourth, just ahead of Star Shell, with Blue Jay at the head of the remainder.

Heather -Sprig, Good Sport, and Snatcher were the_ favourites for the Autumn Handicap, and they filled the places. Tan. Snatcher and Many Colours were the first out, and in, the hack straight Snatcher and Tari were showing the way to Many Colours, Good Sport and Lamo-ur. Good Sport ran past the leaders at the distance, followed hy Heather Sprig, and the pair came away from, the field, Good Sport • winning by a head. Snatcher was four lengths -a,way third, with Lam.our, Many Colours and Tari next. Rational, Civilform, , Princess Ronnie. Hall Mark and Koodoo- were all backed i n the Porangaihau Handicap-. Princess Ronnie, Tuahine and D'azzling Light were the first to become prominent. hut Rational soon went up to Blazzlin.g Light and Tuahine lost her id ace. Rational' and Dazzling Light led at the tuni-. from. Pridocks Ronnie, Koodoo aji.d Civilform. Hall Mark came through on the inside in the Straight and just failed- to reach Rational hy a, nose. NOTEB- AND COMM UNITS,

(Bv I ‘A f ae-cei i as. ’’)

'Hie winter racing season wilt be opened by the Kgmomt Racing Club on Wednesday next, and present indications .point to this popular club having a. good meeting. A fair number of Auckland and Waikato trained ihorsesi are engaged at the Elgnnont and Wanganui meetings, and their presence will do much, to make Hie gatfhering.s. interesting. Considering- Ids: good record; in steep loci liases. Pas-sin.’. Through is well handicapped in the Great Northern Steeplechase.. Those who .should know say that Locliison is. just as clever over “big country” as (lie. Inns .shown himself to lie over' battens.

Seeing that:. Lochson will he well up in the weights in the big leading hurdle races to be decided during the winter, it would appear good -business to devote this gelding’s energies to steeplecih.ais.ing, as the weight has not the. same effect there.

Many Austnaliaus are looking to and hoping tli ait. The Hawk will beat Gloaming at Hastings.to-day. _ Seeing tluirt Crloaiini’ii® is a.ll • Australl<xil bred. while The Hawk was foaled in New Zealand, this. desire is . somewhat unique. It is stated that the Rlangitikei Hunt Climb have decided to throw in their lot with the Minton Jockey Club, thus a good 1 twoi days’ ’(programme can he .advertised. An effort is being made to hiring about a. similar affiliation between tbs Hamilton Racing Club and the Waikato Hunt Club. On many occasion s» when «v. chainpi on meets defeat, isome excuse is oiferccl tor emth, .but generally the true reason lies in the fact that a better man or beast bias happened along. In common with others, excuses have been made for Gloaming, when, the •son of The Welkin haisi tasted defeat, but in each case suloh excuses were, well founded, ais shown in motet cases when Gloaming again met life vanquisher. Sa.sonof, Poitrel, .Desert Gold, Thespian and Beau ford! each defeated Gloaming at their first meeting, but Gloaming alwa.ysi made matters even by winning at the second contest. Trainers’ and jockeys-’ licenses are issued in this Dominion on the understanding that the holders adhere to certain conditions.' If what one hears at any race meeting such conditions are not complied, with, and evidently such have reached the earsi of responsible officials, with the result that some will at least have difficulty in getting their .1 iceuses renewed. Prior to to-day’s raice Gloaming and The Hawk had met twice. The first occasion on which they met was the Islington Plato-, run at Eilleirsli© in the sea, sou, 1921-22, which event was won by Tliesipian in 1.36 3-5. Gloaming was second, but The Hawk was unplaced. Their second, meeting took nliaioe at Roisehill. last spring, the event being the Stakes. This event resulted : Ballvnteuai 8.11 first. Gloaming 9.0 second, The Hawk 9.0 third. Time, 1.38 1-5.
