OPPOSITION IN HOLLAND
CHAMBER’S REFUSAL. MUCH CONCERN. CREATED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COT Y RL, ii 1 (Received May 9, 9.10 a.m.) THE HAGUE, May 8. Owing to the Chamber’s decision the Dutch Olympic Committee is most embarrassed, and it may be forced to announce that Holland will be unable to organise the Olympiad in 1928. The Chamber’s decision was reached after ail acrimonious debate. The Minister for Education , pleaded that it would be a reflection in the world’s eyes if Holland refused to have the games. Opposition came from a considerable group of Conservatives who based their objections on religious grounds, contending that sporting demonstrations were encouraging loose living and immorality, and also entailed a lot of Sabbath breaking. The newspaper Handelsblad says that the matter will not be allowed to rest where it is.
The town councillors are backing .up the sporting and other bodies in their appeals for the establishment of a fund in order not to jeopardise the holding of the Olymxiiad as planned.—A. and N.Z. Assn. \
