MODIFIED POLICY. IN FAVOUR OF BRITAIN. WIN FOR THE OPPOSITION. BY CABLE—TRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received May 6, 9.35 a.m. CAPETOWN. May 5. The decision of the iMnister to modify the trade policy by giving Britain the most favoured nation treatment is regarded as an important tactical victory for the opposition. It is understood that the change is due partly to Labour pressure, but the general public associated it with ihe influence of the Prince of Wales. No doubt there has been a division in the Cabinet. The National organ, the Burger, expresses great dissatisfaction at the Government decision, which it says, absolutely destroys the quid pro quo basis of the fiscal policy. It urges the Government either to revert to its original proposal or abolish preference altogether.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
