MITCHELL TELLS HOW TG SWING TO GAIN POWER,.

There is no golfer in the world more capable of giving advice on driving than Abe Mitchell, the Briton who is now touring the United States in company with George Duncan. In commenting on the extraordinary power he gets into his tee shot, Mitchell said recently:— “The average golfer doesn’t get enough initial velocity in the ordinary drive. Most players swinging such a way as to< have the greatest power in their drive after they hit rather than at the very second the ball is hit. By timing my stroke so that the greatest power is in front when I. hit the ball I naturally hit it farther than the man whose swing meets the ball when the swing is not; quite at its fullest.”

U.S. GOLF INVASION. American golfers will make a strong bid this season for the British amateur and open championships.. Mr. “Bobby” Jones will compete in the amateur championships at Westward Ho!, and this young., prodigy, together with Hagen, Sarazen, Macdonald Smith, and other leading professionals, will play in the open Prestwick. To estimate the chances of any single player with prcision is impossible, for the. Element of luck enters into golf fully as much as it does into cricket. A betting man, however, would probably offer a shade of odds on the Americans. The consistency of their leading professionals is amazing, and, in addition, any one of them is capable of one of those brilliant flashes that often carry a player to victory. Hagen, a great golfer with a marvellous fighting temperament, will probably start favourite if inform, with Macdonald Smith, Jones, Sarazen, Duncan, Kirkwood, Hutchinson, Barnes,’and Havers all fairly close in the betting. GOLFERS CARRY CHARMS IN BIG GAMES. Golfers, like ball players, have their superstitions. Most of them carry charms before entering a big contest ~-Hagen a rabbit’s foot; Sarazen an ancient pocket coin. Johnny Farrel attributes his remarkable medal record of 1914 to his sartorial appearance. If Johnny is dolled up in Foresome clothes, he has his fill of confidence. The Quaker Ridge professional is out to win one of the great classics in 1925, and is collecting a wardrobe of radiant raiment that should have galleryites wearing sun glasses.
