ORGAN RECITAL.

BY MR CLEMENT HOWE. Following the scheme of a series of recitals, each to embrace a special period, Mr Clement Howe gave last night at the Presbyterian Church his second recital. He included in his programme selections from three great masters—Bach, Handel and Mendelssohn. The choice of numbers was well made to illustrate striking contrasts in style, and gave the listener a very good idea of the scope of the compositions of these masters of music. Bach was represented by one of his earlier fugues, that in D minor; two' choral preludes based on well-known chorales; two excerpts from his vocal music, and three orchestral dances. Mr Howe played them with much taste, the fugue and the dances being perhaps- the most attractive. 1 The works of the great writer of oratorio, Handel, supplied four numbers—ah organ concerto, a selection from an opera and from the Messiah, and the famous Largo. The concerto was specially, interesting, and gave fine opportunity for registration and for executant effects. Lastly, the famous master Mendelssohn, of the 1 century after Bach and Handel, was represented by two movements from an organ, sonata, the lovely Spring Song, and an instrumental andante for violin and accompaniment. The sonata, selection was that which was most appreciated, the florid manual work and the fine pedal obligato being outstanding features. As before, Mr Howe exemplified his work by some history of the composers, their life and works. ! The recital was much appreciated by all present.
