The Hawera Star.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1924. NEXT WEEK’S CARNIVAL.

Delivered every evening by 3 o'clock lu Hawera Manaia, Normanby, Okaiawa, Eltham : Mangatoki, Kaponga, Awatuna, Opunake. Otakeho, Manutahi, Alton, Hurley ville, Patea, Waverley, Hokoia, Whakamara, Ohangai, Meremere, Fraser Road, and Ararata.

Hawera should wear a carnival appearance next, week, when the Egmont A. and P. Association’s annua] show will be held and in the business area of the town will be inaugurated the community lighting scheme, a progressive move made by the Retailers’ Association for' the purpose of adding to the town’s attractiveness. As shown by the figures published yesterday, the Egniont A. and P. Association has received record entries for this year’s, show, and it is evident that the farmers and breeders in South Taranaki realise that in the show they have a very valuable institution, which merits their best support. The week should prove a red-letter one for the town, and it is to be hoped that the weather will be at its best. The townspeople may look to a great influx of visitors, not only frpm. South Taranaki, but from

places further afield. On such, an occasion people have a. great opportunity to advertise the town and district, and we hope that the visitors next week will be warmly welcomed and that their stay will be made very happy. As for the show, it will be full of interest, and it will be one of the occasions on which town and country will again meet and will have a. chance to discuss the many matters of vital interest to both. The farmer will 'bring before the townspeople his best animals—beautiful iypes of the various breeds—and we hope that the onlookers will be inspired by the scenes before them to think of what the Dominion owes to the primary industries, which provide the great bulk of the country’s wealth. In recent yeans, probably through the good influence of agricultural and pastoral shows held in various places, a better understanding between town and country has been reached, and one hears little nowadays of the once common bickerings the one against the other. Both town and country have their proper places, and the one' is necessary to the other, but we think that still greater co-operation between the two is possible, and it has always been our aim to encourage it. While therefore the people of Hawera should give their best support to the show, we hope that the people of the farming areas will reciprocate and thus help the chief town and district of South Taranaki to grow and prosper. The week can well be kept in high carnival each year, and by all combining in the effort much can be done to make it a great success. We look forward to the week being a memorable one, if 'bad weather does not interfere with the arrangements, and we very much hope that the show will be a .stimulus to encourage a much more general support for the association, which has in the past done excellent work and which will in the future continue to y serve the town and district. Even at the risk of being charged with repetition, we orice again appeal to. those people who have not hitherto done so to consider becoming members, of the A. and P.' Association, and so help the organisation financially. The association would gladly welcome a -much larger membership, for the work of preparing for the annual show involves considerable expense, and the larger the number of members the easier is it for the committee and officers to make their arrangements and carry them to success. ; The fact that record entries hiave been received for next week’s show dehotes substantial progress, for, as already pointed out, last year’s show had the advantage of the rich 0.0. R. Stakes and the Ayrshire championships to attract entries beyond the ordinary. It is, of course, not possible to' secure such competitions for every shqw, hence there is all the more satisfaction to be derived from this year’s record. Throughout the year the officers and executive put in a tremendous amount of work, entirely gratuitously, though attendances at the frequent meetings involves considerable personal expense in some cases. To encourage these patriotic workers in the interests of the district all that is now required is a record attendance of . the public. We wish the show good fortune, and hope. that the week will in all respects come up to the expectations of those (the A. and P. Association, the Retailers’ Association and the Athletic Club) who are working hard to make it a great success.
