His many friends will be pleased to learn that Mr Geo. Smith, of Palmer road, Kapuni, has recovered from the sharp attack of pleurisy, owing to which he has been incapacitated during the past week. A Press Association message received to-day states that Mr. ld>. H. Huey, General Manager of New Zealand Railways from 1913 to 1919, arrived from London on private business to investigate proposal's on behalf of Cammell. Laird and Co. Mr. T. C. Lowry, a young New Zealander who was captain of the Cambridge eleven during the past season, also returned this week.

The representative of Te Aroha at the Municipal Conference, Mrs. Ada M. Gordon, holds a unique position in the Dominion, says the New Zealand Herald. She is an elected member of the Borough Council and enjoys the honour of discharging the official duties of Mayoress, the Mayor. Mr. R. Coulter, being a bachelor. She is a good platform speaker and very capable. It was in recognition of her services to. the borough that the council asked her to represent it at the conference.

The death occurred recently of Mrs. Tr>psie Banks, wife of the late Thomas Malcolm Banks, of Auckland. Deceased was a sister of the late James Wiseman. She was born in Auckland ■n 1851 and lived there for some time. Mrs. Banks died on Sunday afternoon et the residence of her son. Mr. C. M. Banks. 8 Lpland T?oa.d, Keltmrn, after ■i brief illness. Other sons are Mr. Stanley Banks, chemist, of Johannesburg, now on his way to visit New Zealand, and Mr. Leslie Banks, at present in Taranaki.
