The price of- butter in Auckland was reduced a s from Monday, October 27, twopence per lb., making the retail prices in tne respective grades—superfine Is lOd, first grade factory Is 9d, second grade Is Bd. Blackleg in cattle has made its appearance during the last fortnight in the Cambridge district (says the Auckland Star). There have been two cases at Fencourt and two at Monaval©, all proving fatal. The Hawera Methodist Choir have been practising for some time the beautiful cantata “The Great Light,” under the choirmaster and organist, Mr Hutton. It will be rendered in the Methodist Church to-night (Wednesday). The soloists are Mesdanies Tozer, A. Bates and Mrs M. M. Grahame (of Gisborne), Miss Enid Spurdle, Messrs G. Harvey, Newberrv, A. G. Reid. Mrs M. Grahame, who is singing for the first time in Hawera, comes from Gisborne with a reputation as a singer. No charge will be made for admission, but a colleffion will be taken up iu aid of the trust fund. The lack of parental control in the home was stressed by the Rev. G. E. Moreton, chaplain of the Anglican Memorial Home for Boys in his report (states the Dunedin Star. “I am more than convinced,” he said, “that parents do not realise their responsibility, as lack of parental control is much in evidence to-day amongst children, and their homes are only places where they sleep and have their meals. Home life is sadly lacking on all sides. Another aspect of our modern, civilisation is the number of maintenace cases which are brought before the Magistrate’s Court, but I am thankful to be able to record that in a. considerable number a reconciliation has been brought about.” To mark the closure of the dancing season a combined committee of ladies and gentlemen of the Rowan district are organising a plain and fancy dress ball, to be held in the Rowan hall on Friday, November 7. Various competitions, which should afford much additional attraction to the conventional programme, are being arrangedThe, costumes prize-list includes two ladies’ and two gentlemen’s trophies, to he awarded in the respective classes to the wearer of the best fancy and the most original dress, while in two, free entry novelty dances and a waltzing competition, which should create keen, interest, good prizes are also promised. Excellent music and a damtv supper are being arranged for, and the floor is to receive special attention, the committee members being desirous that the event will achieve the success which has made the Rowan functions so popular throughout the season.
